You Aren't That Special: Embracing Your Humanity for True Self-Compassion

By Emilee Henriquez, LCMHC, Therapist and Self-Compassion Expert

As a therapist, I understand that this statement might sound controversial at first: "You aren’t that special." But bear with me. This perspective is not about diminishing your worth; it's about embracing your humanity. Self-compassion requires us to recognize our shared human experience. You are not a unique unicorn immune to struggle and stress. If you are alive, you are likely experiencing challenges. Instead of asking, “Why me?” and “Why is it always me?”, consider asking, “How is this working for me?” and “How does this help me understand the human experience?”

Understanding True Self-Compassion

Seeing Your Humanity

Self-compassion starts with acknowledging that you are a human being with struggles and imperfections, just like everyone else. This recognition helps dismantle the isolation that often accompanies suffering. You are not alone in your pain; it’s a part of the collective human condition.

Moving Beyond Self-Pity

Asking “Why me?” fosters a sense of self-pity and victimhood, which can be paralyzing and counterproductive. On the other hand, asking, “How is this working for me?” shifts the focus to growth and learning. It encourages you to see challenges as opportunities for personal development.

Cultivating Empathy

When you recognize that your struggles are a part of being human, it becomes easier to empathize with others. This empathy can deepen your relationships and foster a greater sense of connection and community.

Reframing Your Perspective

“How is This Working for Me?”

This question invites you to explore how your experiences, even the difficult ones, can contribute to your growth. It encourages a mindset of resilience and resourcefulness. For example, facing a setback at work can teach you valuable lessons about perseverance and adaptability.

“How Does This Help Me Understand the Human Experience?”

By reflecting on how your struggles help you understand the broader human experience, you can find meaning in your pain. This perspective fosters a sense of shared humanity and can be incredibly healing. It allows you to see your challenges as part of a larger tapestry of life experiences.

Practical Steps to Embrace Your Humanity

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness helps you stay present and aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. It allows you to observe your struggles with curiosity and compassion rather than criticism and despair.

Engage in Self-Reflection

Take time to reflect on your experiences and what they have taught you. Journaling can be a helpful tool for this practice. Write about your challenges and the insights you have gained from them.

Connect with Others

Sharing your struggles with trusted friends or a support group can help you feel less isolated. Hearing about others' experiences can also remind you that you are not alone in your journey.

Seek Professional Support

If you find it challenging to shift your perspective on your own, consider seeking support from a therapist. Therapy can provide a safe space to explore your feelings and develop healthier ways of thinking.

Conclusion

Embracing the idea that you aren’t that special, in the context of your struggles, is a powerful step toward true self-compassion. It’s about recognizing your humanity and the shared experiences that connect us all. By asking, “How is this working for me?” and “How does this help me understand the human experience?”, you can transform your challenges into opportunities for growth and connection. Remember, being human means facing difficulties, but it also means having the capacity for resilience, empathy, and profound personal growth.
