Please read below to understand the difference between therapy and coaching.
Coaching is not psychotherapy. It does not include a diagnosis, treatment plans, or medical treatment.
A licensed therapist can also function as a coach - and many do!
Coaches offer a different type of support; often to assist clients out of state, looking for mentorship, or those who no longer resonate with the formal structure of psychotherapy but still seek mental health support in a less rigid and structured manner.
In coaching, there's a departure from the medical model—no mental health evaluations or diagnoses are provided, and psychological assessments aren't interpreted.
Unlike therapy, formal treatment plans and psychotherapy techniques are not utilized due to ethical considerations.
Coaching also does not extend to medical clinical or therapeutic services, and insurance coverage is not applicable.
Additionally, emotional support animals cannot be prescribed, and confidentiality isn't assured, nor are dual relationships and other ethical standards enforced.
Coaching services are not suitable for addressing high-risk needs and associated concerns. This includes situations involving suicidal thoughts, self-harm tendencies, psychosis, active substance abuse, or ongoing eating disorder behaviors. In such cases, it's essential to seek the support of a therapist, either exclusively or in conjunction with coaching.
If a diagnosis or a higher level of care is warranted, it's advisable to seek a referral for assessment and treatment from a licensed therapist.
Ethically, a coach should guide individuals with mental health conditions requiring specialized treatment models to seek therapy from a qualified professional.
It's important to note that coaches do not and are not permitted to practice any form of psychotherapy.
Coaching centers on enhancing a particular aspect of your life and is geared toward addressing present challenges and planning for the future.
Coaching is a proactive support that focuses on skills, education, strategies, and application.
It's important to understand that coaching is not designed to treat mental health disorders.
Successful coaching relies on clients' ability to accept direct input and feedback to tackle specific issues, coupled with a motivation to take action and follow through.
By scheduling a coaching session, you acknowledge that it is coaching, distinct from mental health therapy.
